Q: How are your dyes different from "low-impact" or "eco-friendly" dyes?
A: Low-impact and eco-friendly dyes are chemical dyes that have been approved by various certification bodies (such as GOTS, or Global Organic Textile Standard) as acceptable dyes to use on organic materials. In particular, these dyes cannot use certain restricted chemicals or compounds that are known carcinogens or have other extremely toxic properties such as Azo dyes. With respect to dyes, the certification bodies are most concerned with the control and use of the chemical materials used in the wet processing steps of organic material, rather than the fact that chemicals are being used to process organic material. To their credit, they strive to control and reduce the discharge of chemicals into the environment and they require stricter controls about the quantity and type of chemicals that can be used. Unfortunately, in many cases consumers and retailers are mistakenly told that these dye processes are "natural" or "organic" dyes, which is simply not the case.
In comparison, our herbal dye process uses no chemicals at any step in the wet processing of our materials. We only use natural plants and minerals for each of the 6 wet processing steps. For more information about our dye process, click here.
Q: Where are your products made?
A: Our products are made in India. The cotton is grown by organic cotton farms located in north central India, our fabric is woven and processed by a company in Ahmedabad, India and our stitching is done by a company located in Umergaon, India, just north of Mumbai and another located in Gurgaon. It is important to note that we have visited each step of our production process from farm to garment so that we can ensure that our products are made with the highest ethical and social standards possible.
Q: Can I wash your products with my regular laundry?
A: Yes, although we do recommend that the first washings are done separately. Our garments do require some special care, but they can be washed with other garments as long as they are in a cold, delicate cycle and are tumble dried on low. To reduce the impact of care on the environment and to ensure a long life for the garments, we do recommend that you hang dry whenever possible. For complete care instructions, click here.
Q: Where can I buy your products?
A: Our products are sold at boutique retailers. We are expanding our distribution every day, to check our current list of retailers, click here.
Q: Do you use any synthetic chemicals?
A: No. Our natural dye process is completely chemical free. In fact, the water from our dye process is recycled using a simple carbon and organic filtration system and can then be used in the dye process or to irrigate crops. In addition, we do not use any heavy metals like chromium to fix our dyes (as mordants) to the fabric.
